The Iain Murray Quaich is a small silver R&A quaich and was donated in 2019 by the Caledonian Club Golfing Society and named after Iain Murray (Captain 1988, President since 2023, Club member since 1970, and founder of the match with Chantilly, where he is also a member).
It is played for as an annual match between the Caledonian Club Golfing Society and members of Golf de Chantilly, alternating between Paris and the Edinburgh area to coincide with the Scotland v France rugby international.
The match has a complex history. There are recollections that the first Caledonian Club trip to Chantilly may have been as far back as 1987 but there are no details to back this up. In 1997, there is a note in a committee minute that the Caledonian Club was “narrowly beaten 3-2 in a very enjoyable match against Chantilly in Paris, so the Peter Allinson trophy, which has never been seen, remains in Chantilly.”
There are further notes from 2000 to the effect that a “silver medal in a box” was presented by Chantilly and played for in a three club match between members of Chantilly, Prestwick and the Caledonian Club. Whether this was a one-off or a regular match remains a mystery, as does the wherabouts of the silver medal which the Caledonian Club apparently won.
There were further informal matches played between members of Chantilly and members of the Caledonian Club in most years thereafter to coincide with the Scotland v France rugby international. The match picked up in intensity in the pre-Covid years and the Iain Murray Quaich was installed in 2019, since when a formal match result has been recorded.
